Subject:Wierd kitchen time and rude manager

My wife and I spend few days in Indianapolis and went looking for a sushi place. The hotel people recommended Sushi on the rocks not without adding that sometimes the quality of the menu is inconsistent. We were very surprised by the decoration, is actually quite cool. The sever (Melissa) was very nice and attentive. The appetizer we had, the rolls and the Dori Katsu were nice and tasty. But THEN, we dare to ask for a third roll. It was Monday night, closing time as indicated at the door was at 10:00 pm. We asked for the extra roll around 9:40 pm. After a few minutes the waitress came back saying that the chef refused to make any more sushi because he was closing and actually he "was very crabby" about people asking for more sushi at that time. The waitress offer to talk with the manager about that. She did and returned saying she was very sorry but there was nothing to be done and our check was already prepared. Do you think the manager talk to us at any moment? NO. He never said anything to us. He simple didn't care. However, when a girl friend of his arrived at 9:55 with a party of 18, he didn't refuse service. The sushi bar was apparently closed but at the time we left the place (well after 10)people just kept going in without any problem.
This is the fist time a thing like this happen to us in any restaurant before. If the closing time is at 10, normally the kitchen closes at 10 (otherwise indicated, but for god sake, is a freaking restaurant were food is served, that is the business!!!!) not 20 minutes before when people is still eating. So be aware, unless you want to deal with rude people and bad service, don't go there near to closing time.

Subject:Many thanks for helping make my birthday such a good time!

My wife and I with another couple tried SOTR for the first time last night to celebrate my birthday. Great restaurant, good location downtown with plenty of places within walking distance. Our waiter took the time to explain the menu to my wife and then to the other people in my party when they arrived. We had decided to just get the boat (sorry, but I forget the name from the menu) for the four of us. Our waiter talked everyone through what sort of sushi that we could expect. I'm a sashimi sort of guy while my fellow diners really didn't think that they would enjoy that as much as I would. Showing great flexibility our waiter then changed around the types of items that would appear in our boat...making sure that there was enough sashimi for me and substituting other rolls for everyone else. I wish I could remember everything that they put in that boat! Our waiter was pretty happy in telling us that this was the most rolls that they had ever stuffed onto the boat so far. Suffice it to say that it was all delicious. Everything tasted fresh, the tempura was crispy and light...everything from the appetizers to our desert was excellent. We will be returning to SOTR. Our waiter was great and extremely helpful and the food was amazing. While we had ordered the most expensive item on the menu, the amount and quality of the sushi made it worth every penny. Thumbs up for SOTR and thanks for a great experience!

Subject:pleasant experience

I just so happen to be in Indianapolis a few days ago and stopped in to grab a bite to eat. It was a little busy and but the wait was reasonable. I enjoyed the service i had and found the food to be quite impressive. I don't often find a restaurant i would make a special trip to while passing through cities. But i am glad to say when i am visiting again that i would make a special trip down to this one. Kudos to the Chef.

The inside of the restaurant smells funny. Not fishy necessarily but just not pleasant. These are easy fixes though.

Subject:The truth about sushi on the rocks

my husband and I have been eating at sushi on the rocks for about a year or 2 now. It is the most inconsistent restaurant ever. However, because we love the quality of the sushi we return and have learned a few things to make the service better. 1st, the only servers their that are worth a damn are maranda, Cody, Pierce, and some short girl with blond hair. They rock! The other servers are either rude, pushy or just kinda.... off. Another thing, I would stay away from kitchen food if you are hungry or in a hurry because it takes forever to get out. It does seem like no one is doing anything to improve it all though. I just stray away from busy times and request one of the servers I named above.
